Gender-breaking norms in fashion
17 January 2023
The world is evolving into a newer and brighter future full of innovations, and we wish to see that gender will not be an issue in fashion anymore.
From the guilded age to 3D fabrics, the fashion universe has never stopped being innovative and changing. And nowadays more than ever, the evolution of gender norms, androgynous and genderless outfits and make up looks are now at the front of the fashion industry scene.
Many brands are now turning their backs on the stereotypes created from before the break out of these genderless norms. If we go back to the first types of androgynous styles, the year 2000’s have shaped it with the start of emo fashion, with inspiration from the punk movement of the 70’s as well as khôl wore during Egyptian times from Antiquity.
In fact, make-up was not only allowed for women but for men as well. Eye-liner and mascara were essential for these eras that men did not hesitate in wearing them and advocate them.
The break from the 80’s to the 00’s was necessary to create a breach in time and let people and fashion evolve into a whole new style, the emo one where not only make-up but also clothes were used both by women and men.
Nowadays, high-end luxury brands are perpetuating the gender-breaking norms movement and putting it wholeheartedly in their collections. For instance, Louis Vuitton with its neutral cuts and shapes of clothes during the Spring/Summer 21 collection let people understand that gender neutrality was a notion that should be considered more.
Smaller brands such as BARKALND also want to break stereotypes and focus more on the clothes rather than the gender.
